What are you archiving?

Archive

Internet’s ephemerality is a thing, you know, so what are you archiving? Maybe you like anime? Or you’re an appreciator of Rocco Siffredi’s fine work of art? You like to hoard books, so you already have a copy of Z-library? Maybe old MOD or MIDI tunes?

Personally I’m not archiving current stuff (current applications for example, except operating systems in ISO image format) and I’m not too worried about RAID 1 or special NAS hardware/software. Basically I’m archiving stuff that will be hard to find or impossible, stuff that I might enjoy to browse through someday, old photos and videos, old movies, etc.

  • About 150GB of ISO images, Windows 3.11 to 10, Devuan, Debian, openEuler, Ubuntu, Fedora, ROSA Linux, ALT Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, Mac OS X to macOS 13 (Ventura), Red Star, OpenIndiana, Solaris, for various architectures, x86, x86_64, AArch64, ppc and RISC-V.
  • About 10GB of music in mp3 format (yes, I know) that I usually listen to, and a full copy of everything Captain Blackbeard Radio ever released.
  • Approx. 200GB of movies, mostly old stuff that can be found in my favorite films list.
  • Documentation, drivers, firmware, books and software for every device in my house (laptops, SBCs, USB adapters, cameras, typewriters, etc).
  • A small collection of colorful music videos (about 200 of them).
  • About 200GB of games in GoG installer format as well as ISO images, complete with serial numbers, no-cd cracks and mods/tools.
  • About 30GB of books in PDF and ePub format.
  • Every digital photo I ever took, and scans of film photos, which occupies approx. 100GB.
  • Full-install virtual machines for almost all operating systems in existence (DOS, Windows, Linux, BSDs, NextStep, Solaris, Mac OS, Mac OS X, macOS, hobby OSes, React OS, etc). Should be about 400GB, I think.
  • Bunch of 32bit Windows software for my Nokia Booklet including web browsers, archivers, media programs, Office suites, development IDEs, etc.
  • Personal projects and everything I ever worked on.

Everything fits on two external 2TB disks in cold storage, with plenty of space to add more stuff when needed.

What are you archiving, friends? Drop me an e-mail about it, encrypted or not, or write on your websites and send me the links.

Later updated:

Currently I’m scraping a Social Media Platform (see pic attached), which I used to work for and is probably going to die soon. Currently I only store raw text which is already at ~15GB with >6M Records in the database. Apart from that I have a 10TB (6 Cold, 3 Hot, 1 Off-site) storage solution for archival. I’m hosting every message I’ve ever sent/received, every image I ever took, every song I ever downloaded, retro games, an eBook library with ~100,000 documents (mostly science stuffs), old viruses for analysis, site dumps for forums I was active on but shutdown later on (RIP BlackPearl), ~100GB of old Git Repositories, system images, a mirror of the top 10K docker images, ~500GB of anime, ~300GB of movies and anything I’m afraid of losing (which is everything, I’m a really bad data hoarder). Cumulatively, my data usage is ~4TB/10TB so I really need to expand my storage since it’s getting full..
