Working on my iMac G5

iMac G5

Today I opened my iMac G5 (it hasn’t been opened since 2004, except for when I upgraded the RAM and HDD), so I decided to remove everything, clean it up and re-paste the CPU/GPU/U3 chipset. Took me about one hour to do that, luckily I have the iMac G5 model that’s sooooo easy to open up (unlike the older versions, ALS and iSight). I haven’t noticed any difference in temperatures (CPU idles at 60 degrees and in full load goes to 70 degrees with a max peak of 72) but the old thermal paste was more like thermal flakes. My iMac wasn’t really noisy before, but I think it might be even less now. The Nvidia GPU had a thermal pad on it, which I also replaced with Noctua’s NT-H2 paste that I’ve been using on my iBook G4. The paste on the U3 chipset was looking way better than the CPU one, I guess the temperatures there aren’t as extreme.

For a 21-years-old machine, it just works and does its job perfectly, providing me with hardware and software so I can write on my website, work on various projects (like the Café, my forks of Firefox, Thunderbird, Alkor, etc), and play the games I love. What more can you ask?

Currently the iMac is upgrading Macports and dependencies (without the dreaded gcc15). I’ll be working on an article about Apple’s iMac G5 and it’ll go next to the iBook G4.

Halt and Catch Fire, 2014 - 2017

Halt and Catch Fire, 2014 - 2017

This has to be one of the most underrated TV shows ever, the problem is that you will binge-watch the first season in one sitting and there’s only 40 episodes spread out on 4 seasons. I can already see the issues in the future seasons, but it’s a good way to spend your time and learn a thing or two.

Computers aren’t the thing. They are the thing that gets us to the thing.

Pablo Nouvelle & Nativ - Paradis (live)

Bitte show me the Way
Bitte zeig mir, dass du care’sch
Bitte show me the Way
Bitte zeig mir dä Way
Is Paradis.

If you’re not already familiar with Fabio Friedli or his nom de guerre Pablo Nouvelle, I suggest you fix this problem you never knew you had. It’s probably the best thing that came out of Switzerland and that includes Ötzi and the purple cows. Besides, you never knew you need some Swiss Reggae in your life, did you? Excellent live session with Nativ vocal, Toni Schiavano on bass, Matthias Nydegger on drums and Pablo Nouvelle on keyboards.

Black Sea Dahu - Take Stock Of What I Have (live)

The ghosts are dancing
Just as they were when I was fifteen and the walls would bend
Now drown out the howling
It’s not what you think.

Morgan, this crop stuff is just about a bunch of nerds who never had a girlfriend their whole lives. They’re like thirty now. They make up secret codes and analyze Greek mythology and make secret societies where other guys who never had girlfriends can join in. They do stupid crap like this to feel special. It’s a scam. Nerds were doin’ it twenty five years ago and new nerds are doing it again.

The first time I heard that story, I used to think this would be the road I’d die on.

What if the Smoke Monster was the good guy all along?

AFK_ - cyberpunk short film

AFK_ by Tyler Hynes, probably one of the best cyberpunk short films.

Ringing Bell, 1978

Ringing Bell, 1978

The Snow fell for days without letting up, covering the ground with a smooth white blanket. Whatever happened on that mountain, whatever happened in that meadow, was covered up without a trace to remind those who had witnessed it. And later, some claimed to remember Chirin as a lamb, others said he was a spirit from the mountain. But they were too wrapped up with their own lives to worry about it for long. And one night during a terrible blizzard, the gentle sound of a bell was heard. But the sheep in the meadow never saw Chirin again.

RIP Robert Redford

Like many fly fishermen in western Montana where the summer days are almost Arctic in length, I often do not start fishing until the cool of the evening. Then in the Arctic half-light of the canyon, all existence fades to a being with my soul and memories and the sounds of the Big Blackfoot River and a four-count rhythm and the hope that a fish will rise. Eventually, all things merge into one, and a river runs through it. The river was cut by the world’s great flood and runs over rocks from the basement of time. On some of those rocks are timeless raindrops. Under the rocks are the words, and some of the words are theirs. I am haunted by waters.

RIP Robert Redford.

A gentle introduction to CP/M

This article is just what the headline promises: an introduction to the CP/M operating system. No previous knowledge of 1970s and early ’80s operating systems is required. However, some familiarity with Linux or a BSD-style operating system is assumed, as the setup process suggested here involves using a package manager and command-line tools. But why explore CP/M in the 2020s? There are (at least) two good reasons: 1) historical education 2) gaining a better understanding of how computers actually work. A gentle introduction to CP/M

Hacking

Hacking in 2025 is going to “Hacker” News and reading what The Atlantic propaganda tells you about the things you should care about.

Where the Red Fern Grows, 1974

Where the Red Fern Grows, 1974

I’ve never been back to the Ozarks, all I have left are my dreams and memories, but some day, if God is willing, I’d like to go back and walk again in the hills I knew as a boy. And I’d like to touch the heart that’s carved in an old sycamore tree that says, Dan and Ann. And I’ll look for that sacred spot by the river where the red fern grows.

The Demo Scene is Dying, But That's Alright

The scene - incorporating the cracking scene of the 1980s and early 1990s - has been declared dead several times over since the late 1980s. Some claimed the Amiga would kill it, others that the PC would destroy its soul or that the Internet would rob it of its essence. This is to be expected: In a subculture - which is what the scene is - there’s typically going to be elders lamenting the changing of the old ways, and newcomers eager to bring their own ideas into the mix.

Except… That last part might no longer apply to the scene. Examine photos from a late 1980s rave party and they’ll show a bunch of young people partying hard. Fast forward in time and look at photos from a 2025 rave party, and the concept remains basically the same, but there’s now a different bunch of young people partying hard. When performing the same experiment on the scene, there’s close to zero teenagers among 2025 demo party attendants. Look closer and it becomes evident that many of the 2025 attendants are in fact the very same persons as the teenagers and twenty-somethings appearing in party photos from 1989. The Demo Scene is Dying, But That’s Alright

Liberal modernity

Liberal modernity implicitly specifies that you should come up with your own reasons and purposes. You’re supposed to find things to care about or to motivate you, or simply dedicate your time to self-enrichment. If you don’t take action to resolve the issue of how to apply yourself, then distraction, consumption and dead-end work are the only things that will fill the void. And you’re filling the void with more void, and the result is skyrocketing levels of depression.

Freedom

The average person only makes horrible decision when given freedom.
