Captain Blackbeard Radio #21

#21: The Night The Darknet Died - Starring Peter Sellers, Talia Shire, Bob Newhart, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sean Connery, Will Smith

ALL FEARS COME ALIVE…

THE KING OF PIRATE RADIO RETURNS WITH THE ULTIMATE AUDIO THRILL RIDE… IF YOU DARE…

…It is odd, now, to sit here, on the pirate ship. And try to sum up, what this episode is and the last several weeks that went into it was. And what sanity looked… before it.

This episode was a war with the forces of nature and the forces of Darkness. The sheer amount of legal speed and cannabis it took… to confront, shape… and animate… this episode could power a Rock and Roll re-birth and golden age. These episodes are living, breathing, wild monsters growing beyond our control.

We feel like we summoned this broadcast from another realm more than created it. And paid the price to do so. This is a highly experimental episode. Where we chased… Every fear. Every thrill. Every extreme human feeling and experience possible. Devilishly thrown into non-stop two hour thrill ride. As explosively and raw, as our imagination and the spirits guiding us permitted.

THIS IS UNLIKE ANYTHING YE HAVE EVER HEARD! Different from any previous CaptainBlackbeard Radio. This episode, represents both a battle against the forces of Darkness. And at the same time, a love letter, to the CaptainBlackbeard Radio fans. Who challenged us to make the most chaotic, thrilling and wild Halloween episode EVER. In the spirit of, past classic CaptainBlackbeard Radio episodes.

Hoshi development setup

Hoshi Operating System - hoshifetch

This article is highly tuned for Hoshi development and it might not be as useful to everybody, but can serve as a guideline for OS development under Windows 10 and Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL).

People who followed my Hoshi OSdev-ing adventure know by now that I started working on the operating system (actually, at that time my plan was to write a bootloader) in 2015, and my development setup was very different at that time, and that it changed several times. In this article I’ll “reveal” a bit of the Hoshi history, describe my current OSdev setup and document it for future iterations.

The kind of tired sleep can't fix

Is this what we’ve to look forward to for God knows how many more decades? Narcissistic, image-obsessed people posting the most frivolous excrement online? Is that what we get? Don’t take me wrong, I’m thankful about not dying of some disease at the ripe old age of 30 or seeing my city sacked and torched by invaders — but fuck — what a shit time to be alive.

I’m tired.

Hoshi System Bar

Hoshi System Bar applets

I forgot that someone e-mailed me a while ago asking me what are the icons on the right side of Hoshi’s taskbar (it’s actually the System Bar) and if I want to “reveal” some information about them, so here is a small walkthrough.

The first applet retrieves the Bitcoin Price Index JSON from Coindesk and displays it on right click. It’s the first applet I did for Hoshi and it prompted the creation of the JSON-parsing library in libhoshi, so I’m pretty attached to it, even if it’s useless to me.

The second applet retrieves weather data from api.openweathermap.org via a similar JSON file and shows the current temperature in the System Bar and some more weather info on right click. The city, API key, unit format are all configurable from a small popup window (and a config file). This applet is obsoleted by the Weather Widget that resides inside the Widgets Bar, I’m keeping it enabled for now so the System Bar looks more active.

Download Debian Linux full ISO collection

August 8, 2024465 words3 mins read

Debian Linux

In case you want the complete Debian Linux distro on discs (if you are a hoarder, a prepper, etc), you can order them online from various places, or you can download them yourself, for archiving. Alternatively, you might want to have a Debian mirror site, in which case this page is your best friend, but here I’ll only be talking about the way to download multiple ISOs of the architecture you selected, using jigdo.

Of course, a “normal” Debian mirror does not carry any CD/DVD images, so how can jigdo download them? jigdo achieves this by downloading individually all the files that are on the CD/DVD. All these files are assembled in one big file which is an exact copy of the CD/DVD image. However, all this happens behind the scenes - all that you need to do is tell the download tool the location of a “.jigdo” file to process.

Trust me, it’s way more simpler than it looks. Start by installing/downloading jigdo:

$ sudo apt install jigdo

or macOS:

$ brew install jigdo

or download the Windows version.

As for media support, you have multiple options:

  • jigdo-dvd (single-layer DVDs) - multiple images, each up to 4482 MB large.
  • jigdo-bd (single-layer Blu-Rays) - multiple images, each up to 23 GB in size.
  • jigdo-dlbd (dual-layer Blu-Rays) - multiple images, each up to 48 GB in size.

Gemini without a browser

August 3, 2024278 words2 mins read

I’ve been working lately on adding Gemini and Spartan protocol support to my Gopher-only browser, Noboru, and since I use Lazarus + OpenSSL for development, I needed to find a way to dump the request data into the console so it can be compared to the request inside Noboru.

Basically, I need to send a TLS-wrapped request to a specific hostname (in this case, gemini.jasonsanta.xyz, sorry Jason for clobbering your Gemini capsule) and port (1965 is the default Gemini port) with the full Gemini URL followed by CRLF (\r\n).

The easiest way it by using OpenSSL’s built-in tool:

Old Computer Challenge - 2024 edition - thoughts

July 20, 20243388 words16 mins read

Old Computer Challenge

If you don’t know what the Old Computer Challenge is, or what was my setup for the OCC-2024, I suggest you read my intro article, I won’t repeat myself here. Instead, I’ll just leave you with some general thoughts and the notes written each day. Enjoy.

  • My OCC setup was Nokia Booklet 3G netbook running Windows 7 Professional and Nokia 808 PureView as phone, running Symbian Belle Refresh. I didn’t touch any other devices (neither computers, nor phones), under any circumstances.
  • Nokia Booklet 3G is a beautiful aluminium-slab machine, it’s too bad Nokia never did netbooks again.
  • An Atom-powered netbook with 1Gb of RAM is enough to do 99% of the things I usually do on a M1 MacBook Pro with 8Gb RAM.
  • People saying don’t use Windows 7 because it has no security and you will be hacked and transformed into Barrack Ossama bin Laden the ex-USA president, are children, and children should be scolded. And slapped.
  • The Windows 7 install has been so tweaked that it resembles more Linux than Windows, but I love it; I was always a fan of Windows 7, Microsoft had something really good there, but the enshittification doesn’t forgive anyone. Same thing with Nokia and Symbian.
  • uBlock Origin is what makes the Web usable. If uBlock is gone, the Web is gone.
  • Pale Moon is an excellent browser, but you need to adapt your web browsing habits and stay away from the bloated websites.
